Rolls-Royce
Limited Edition Boat Tail
Created by a client in homage to his father and family heritage, the Boat Tail represents the apex of the Rolls-Royce’s coachbuilding capabilities
Commissions at the House of RollsRoyce are reaching historical levels, and while you may enter a dealership and customize a Phantom. Ghost, or Cullinane, there is one Rolls-Royce that is unattainable - The Boat Tail.
The creation and sales of the three limited-edition Boat Tails foreshadow a momentous future for the modern coachbuilding movement, with Rolls-Royce confirming Coachbuilding is now a permanent fixture in its portfolio. The spirit of RollsRoyce Coachbuild is that each commission tells a unique story and personal to its owner, reflecting their history, tastes, and sensibilities.
“Coachbuild elevates our work as a House of Luxury into a new space; it is the haute couture of our industry. For the commissioning patron it offers the ultimate in individuality, self-expression and Bespoke service," says Torsten Müller-Ötvös, Chief Executive Officer, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. "Far more than just a beautiful motor car, a coachbuilt creation becomes a legacy that embodies something extraordinarily personal and emotionally resonant for each client. For our designers, too, Coachbuild provides unparalleled creative freedom; opportunities to take design, materials, engineering and craftsmanship to the very highest levels. For Rolls-Royce as a marque, it is both a return to our roots and a contemporary revolution, in which we deliver the impossible in conventional automotive manufacturing into a stunning reality.”
The first Boat Tail debuted at the prestigious Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este in 2021. The second (pictured) debuted a year later at the same venue and was commissioned by an avid collector whose family business grew from his father's origins in the pearling industry. Hence, the client's personal collection of four pear shells inspired the unique exterior finish and interior detailing. The third is currently in production.
Alex Innes, Head of Coachbuild Design, said, “Boat Tail is a step-change in ingenuity and creative liberty. Building a motor car by hand offers a new realm of exploration and possibility: we can accomplish things and resolve challenges that normal industrialized methods would prohibit. This is the tale of two worlds: a modern motor car of contemporary design, made possible by historical techniques and time-honored craft. It is truly, one-of-a-kind.
